What We Do
Floorcovering Installation
Thinking of getting new flooring, you might picture plush carpeting, striking tile, or rich hardwood. But, when it comes to installing new floors, it’s what’s inside (or, technically, what’s underneath) that counts.
Beneath the flooring you live with day-to-day is what construction pros call a subfloor. This first layer of material that sits on top of the floor joists is designed for function. It provides a crucial, flat, structural foundation beneath your actual flooring and is usually made of plywood (or concrete, if you have a slab foundation).
As a homeowner, when you’re interested in getting new floors, the quality of your subfloor makes a big difference. Even though the subfloor layer isn’t visible once your new floors are installed, its condition will make—or break—the installation process because you can’t put in new flooring on top of sub par subfloors. Don’t avoid the cost of floor preperations.

Floorcovering Installation
Before you buy
Hardwood is a popular floor choice because of its natural beauty and timeless style. However, there are limitations on where some wood floors can be installed. Solid hardwood floors are more susceptible to the effects of moisture. Therefore if you are considering hardwood for your basement or over concrete, Engineered Hardwoods are required. Installation methods can also limit where a hardwood floor can be used. Your Colonial design consultant can talk through hardwood’s limitations and benefits to help you determine if this beautiful floor is the best choice for your home.
What to know and do after installation
Your installers will tell you how long to wait before walking on and moving furniture onto your new hardwood. When finished, take a moment to clean the feet or rollers on your furniture before placing it on your new hardwood floor. You may also want to put felt pads on the bottoms to minimize scratches on your new floor. On rare occasions, our installers will discover an existing problem such as a plumbing leak or subfloor problem when your old flooring is removed. Should this happen, our installers will notify you immediately. Any unforeseen repairs or prep work will result in additional charges. Colonial will provide you with a quote prior to the work being done. If the problem is electrical or plumbing-related, we will recommend that you contact the service of your choice to correct the problem. Your Colonial design consultant is available from start to finish – from hardwood selection thru installation.
Preparing for flooring installation
1. Determine who is responsible for moving furniture and other objects from the area to be carpeted. Installers can do this but will charge an additional fee. 2. Review your moldings and baseboards – they may need to be removed for installation and if so, any breakage or paint retouching will be your responsibility after installation. Our installers try to be very careful, but scratches and scrapes to painted surfaces can’t always be avoided. 3. Move all breakables, computers and electronics. What to know and do during installation Be prepared to be at home the day of installation and be available in case the installation crew has questions. Your presence will insure that the correct hardwood is installed in the right areas and the right layout. But plan to stay out of the way, your installers will be using a variety of tools and equipment and you do not want any children or pets underfoot. We also recommend that you walk thru your finished rooms with the chief installer to ask questions and be aware of any final details. Your hardwood floor will need to be acclimated to your home and may be delivered up to three days before installation. The installation of Hardwood is considered a construction project and therefore can cause dust1/
